José María Velasco is recognised for his meticulous documentation of the Mexican geography during the late nineteenth century. In this work, he depicts the area surrounding the Tepeyac hill, a site of historical and cultural weight. The composition follows a traditional academic structure, employing a clear foreground, a middle ground containing the basin, and a distant horizon dominated by the snow-capped volcanoes of the Valley of Mexico.

The foreground features the characteristic pirú trees, or Peruvian pepper trees, which were introduced to the region and became a common element of the local flora.
