The composition is based on a design by the Italian artist Giovanni Battista Cipriani. It depicts an allegorical scene where a seated female figure, representing Art, observes a standing figure who embodies Nature. The interaction between the two figures suggests the eighteenth-century philosophical preoccupation with the relationship between human creative endeavour and the natural world.

The print is executed with the delicate precision characteristic of Earlom, who was widely recognised for his technical mastery of the stipple method. This technique involves the use of small dots to create tonal gradations, allowing for a soft, painterly quality that mimics the appearance of chalk drawings. The figures are arranged within an oval frame, a common device in neoclassical printmaking that directs the viewer's focus toward the central narrative.
