Henri Rivière was a central figure in the French printmaking revival at the end of the nineteenth century. This work belongs to his series 'Aspects of Nature', which demonstrates his fascination with the rugged coastline of Brittany. Rivière was deeply influenced by the aesthetic principles of Japanese woodblock prints, particularly the works of Hokusai and Hiroshige. He adopted their use of flat colour planes, bold outlines, and unconventional perspectives to capture the atmosphere of the French seaside.

In this composition, the viewer is presented with a dramatic view of a steep, rocky cliff face plunging into the sea. The left side of the image is dominated by the vertical, textured mass of the cliff, rendered with rhythmic, calligraphic lines that suggest the geological strata. To the right, a grassy plateau provides a gentler contrast, where a small group of figures rests alongside grazing livestock. The sea itself is depicted through simplified, graphic forms, with white foam patterns creating a sense of movement against the muted green and grey tones of the water.

Rivière utilised the medium of colour lithography to achieve a balance between decorative flatness and atmospheric depth. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he focused on the essential shapes and colours of the coastal environment. The work avoids the sentimentality often found in contemporary academic art, opting instead for a clear, observational approach. The limited, earthy palette reinforces the connection to the natural environment, grounding the scene in the specific geography of the Breton coast. This print remains a clear example of how European artists integrated Eastern graphic techniques to reinterpret their own regional subjects during the turn of the century.
