Henri Rivière was a central figure in the late nineteenth-century French printmaking revival. This work belongs to his series 'Aspects of Nature', a collection of lithographs that demonstrates his fascination with the coastal scenery of Brittany. Rivière drew significant inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints, particularly the works of Hokusai and Hiroshige. This influence is evident in his use of flat colour planes, simplified forms, and a deliberate, decorative approach to composition.

The scene depicts a quiet maritime inlet, framed by rugged rock formations on the right and slender, windswept trees on the left. Small sailing vessels occupy the water, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the natural environment.
