Description
A fine art print of El Greco's 1577 masterpiece, depicting the Virgin Mary's ascent to heaven with the Apostles gathered below.
The Assumption of the Virgin is a seminal work by Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco. Commissioned for the church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, this painting marks the artist's first major project after his arrival in Spain. The composition is divided into two distinct zones, a common device in religious art of the period to separate the celestial from the terrestrial.
In the upper register, the Virgin Mary ascends towards a golden light, surrounded by a host of angels. Her figure is elongated, a characteristic feature of the artist's mature style, which prioritises spiritual expression over anatomical accuracy. The lower register depicts the Apostles gathered around an empty sarcophagus. Their gestures of surprise and devotion provide a human counterpoint to the divine event occurring above. The figures are rendered with fluid, expressive brushwork, and the palette is dominated by cool blues, deep crimsons, and earthy tones.
El Greco's approach to light is unconventional, as it does not emanate from a single source but appears to glow from within the figures themselves. This creates a sense of movement and ethereal energy. The painting reflects the influence of both his Byzantine training and his time spent in Italy, where he studied the works of Titian and Michelangelo. Despite these influences, the final result is distinctly individual. The work demonstrates his ability to manipulate form and colour to convey theological concepts, moving away from the balanced proportions of the High Renaissance towards a more subjective, emotional mode of representation. This print captures the dramatic scale and the specific tonal qualities of the original, allowing for a close examination of the artist's technique and his unique vision of the sacred.
