Description

A refined triptych woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting a group of elegant figures gathered at the historic Tsutsui Well.

This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts a scene at the Tsutsui Well, a location steeped in literary associations from the Ise Monogatari. The composition is a triptych, presenting a gathering of elegant figures in a garden setting. Eishi, a former painter for the shogunate who transitioned to printmaking, brings a refined sensibility to this work. The figures are characterised by their elongated proportions and graceful postures, which became a hallmark of his style during the 1790s.

The scene captures a moment of quiet social interaction. Several women in patterned kimonos are positioned around the well, while others stand nearby, their attention directed towards the water or each other. The inclusion of a male figure adds a narrative element to the group. Above the figures, calligraphic inscriptions are integrated into the composition, providing context and poetic resonance to the visual imagery. The trees, rendered with delicate lines, frame the upper portion of the print, creating a sense of enclosure.

Eishi was known for his ability to capture the atmosphere of the pleasure quarters and the lives of the urban elite. His work often moves away from the more exaggerated features found in other artists of the period, favouring a balanced and sophisticated aesthetic. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that allow the focus to remain on the fluid lines of the garments and the subtle expressions of the subjects. This print serves as an example of the high level of technical skill involved in Edo-period print production, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works of great precision. The arrangement of the figures across the three sheets demonstrates a careful consideration of space and balance, typical of the triptych format used for more expansive narrative scenes.
