Description
An eighteenth-century allegorical engraving by Jean-Charles Delafosse, featuring two framed panels representing Authority and Doctrine through classical symbolism.
This engraving by Jean-Charles Delafosse, titled Autorité et Doctrine, originates from his influential collection of designs, the Nouvelle Iconologie Historique. Delafosse was a prominent French architect and designer whose work defined the transition from the Rococo style to the more rigid, geometric forms of early Neoclassicism. His prints were widely circulated among craftsmen, cabinetmakers, and decorators throughout the eighteenth century.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, each framed by elaborate, sculptural borders. The upper panel, representing Authority, features a regal figure seated upon a throne, accompanied by a lion, set against a backdrop of a rising sun. The lower panel, representing Doctrine, depicts a classical column entwined with a serpent, positioned near a burning lamp and various academic tools, all illuminated by a radiant light source. The frames themselves are highly decorative, incorporating motifs such as ram heads, swags, and acanthus leaves, which demonstrate the artist's mastery of ornamental design.
Delafosse utilised precise, fine lines to achieve a sense of depth and texture within the small-scale scenes. The contrast between the shaded architectural elements and the open, light-filled spaces creates a balanced visual narrative. This print serves as a record of the symbolic language used in decorative arts during the period, where allegorical subjects were frequently employed to convey moral or philosophical concepts. The work reflects the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment, where the classification of knowledge and power was a common pursuit. As a piece of historical documentation, it provides insight into the aesthetic preferences of the era, showing how classical motifs were adapted for contemporary furniture and interior design. The print remains a clear example of the technical skill required for professional engraving in the eighteenth century.
