Charles-François Daubigny was a central figure in the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who prioritised direct observation of nature. This etching, titled Autumn, demonstrates his technical mastery of the medium. Daubigny utilised a variety of line weights and cross-hatching techniques to convey the texture of the earth, the foliage of the trees, and the stillness of the water.

The composition is balanced, drawing the eye from the small figure and donkey on the left across the marshy ground toward the lean, windswept tree that anchors the right side of the frame.
