Description
A modernist oil painting by Emily Carr, capturing the French countryside through bold brushwork and a saturated, expressive colour palette.
Emily Carr produced this work during her formative period in France, specifically while she studied in Brittany. The composition reflects the influence of the Fauvist and Post-Impressionist movements, which she encountered during her time in Paris and the French countryside. The painting displays a departure from her earlier, more traditional academic training, favouring a bolder application of paint and a non-naturalistic colour palette.
The scene depicts a rolling rural vista, characterised by segmented fields of yellow and green that suggest the harvest season. A prominent, rocky hill rises in the background, rendered with thick, directional brushwork that defines its form against a sky composed of staccato marks. Small structures are nestled within the lower right quadrant, providing a sense of scale to the expansive terrain. The foreground features a cluster of trees, their forms simplified into blocks of colour that echo the rhythmic patterns found throughout the composition.
Carr utilised a high-chroma palette to convey the intensity of the light and the seasonal shift. The application of paint is deliberate, with visible brushstrokes that create a sense of movement across the canvas. This work represents a period of experimentation for the artist, as she began to synthesise European modernism with her own developing visual language. By focusing on the structural elements of the terrain rather than precise detail, Carr captured the essence of the French countryside through a subjective lens. The painting remains a clear example of her transition toward the expressive, rhythmic style that would later define her depictions of the Canadian West Coast.
