Description
A melancholic scene of four girls gathering leaves at dusk, painted by John Everett Millais in 1855-1856.
Autumn Leaves, painted by John Everett Millais between 1855 and 1856, captures a quiet, melancholic scene at dusk. The composition features four young girls gathered in a garden, occupied with the task of raking and burning fallen leaves. The two older figures, modelled by the artist's sisters-in-law, Alice and Sophie Gray, stand centrally, while two younger girls assist with the basket and rake. The smoke rising from the pile of leaves creates a hazy atmosphere, softening the transition between the figures and the darkening sky.
Millais executed this work at his home in Perth, Scotland. The painting reflects the Pre-Raphaelite interest in naturalism and the precise observation of seasonal change. The colour palette is dominated by the deep, earthy tones of the decaying foliage, contrasted against the cool, twilight blues of the background. The girls wear dark, simple clothing, which directs attention to their expressions and the manual labour they perform. Unlike many of his earlier narrative works, this painting lacks a specific literary or historical subject. Instead, it focuses on the mood of the season and the passage of time.
John Ruskin, a vocal supporter of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, praised the work for its ability to capture the specific quality of evening light. The painting remains a primary example of the shift in Millais's practice toward more atmospheric, evocative subjects during the mid-1850s. The attention to detail in the texture of the leaves and the rendering of the smoke demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the artist's early career. This print reproduces the subtle gradations of the original oil painting, maintaining the balance between the foreground figures and the distant, silhouetted trees.
