Description
A refined ink and colour study by Shibata Zeshin, featuring a maple branch, a hanging kettle, and mushrooms, capturing the quiet essence of autumn.
Shibata Zeshin, a master of both lacquerware and painting, demonstrates his technical precision in this composition. The work depicts a maple branch laden with autumn foliage, suspended above a kettle and a cluster of mushrooms. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the deep red of the maple leaves to provide a visual anchor against the neutral silk background. The ink wash beneath the kettle suggests a subtle, atmospheric presence, perhaps indicating a small fire or steam, which contrasts with the sharp, deliberate lines of the hanging objects.
Zeshin was active during the transition between the Edo and Meiji periods. His work often bridges the gap between traditional Japanese aesthetics and a more observational approach to nature. The composition is balanced, using the weight of the rock on the right to offset the delicate, hanging elements on the left. The inclusion of everyday items, such as the kettle and mushrooms, reflects the artist's interest in the quiet, domestic aspects of life, often referred to as 'fuzoku-ga' or genre painting. The brushwork is controlled, showing the influence of his training in the Shijo school, which prioritised a direct observation of the natural world. This print captures the fleeting nature of the season, a common theme in Japanese art, presented here with a sense of stillness and careful observation.
