Description
A textured Post-Impressionist study of an autumnal forest by French artist Maxime Maufra, featuring expressive brushwork and a warm, earthy palette.
Maxime Maufra, a member of the Pont-Aven School, produced this study of an autumnal woodland scene with a focus on the textural qualities of the foliage. The composition centres on a large, gnarled tree that leans across the frame, its branches reaching upward against a pale, overcast sky. Maufra employs a technique of short, rhythmic brushstrokes that build up the surface of the canvas, creating a sense of movement within the leaves and the forest floor.
The palette is dominated by earthy tones, including ochre, burnt sienna, and muted greens, which capture the transition of the season. Unlike the strictly observational approach of earlier Impressionists, Maufra leans into a more expressive application of paint. The light is diffused, suggesting a cool, damp day, and the lack of sharp edges gives the scene a soft, atmospheric quality. The path winding through the foreground provides a sense of depth, drawing the eye toward the dense thicket of trees in the background.
Maufra spent much of his career documenting the rugged coastlines of Brittany and the quiet corners of the French countryside. This work reflects his interest in the physical presence of nature, moving away from the ephemeral light effects favoured by his predecessors. The application of paint is deliberate and heavy, giving the trees a sculptural weight. By focusing on the structural forms of the branches and the mottled colours of the dying leaves, Maufra presents a direct observation of the natural world. This print captures the tactile nature of the original oil painting, preserving the visible brushwork and the subtle variations in tone that define Maufra's approach to the rural environment.
