The composition features the figures of Bacchus and Ceres departing from the presence of Venus and Cupid, who are shown in the background near a dying fire. The iconography suggests that love requires the sustenance of food and wine to flourish.

Muller, a prominent Dutch engraver and painter from Amsterdam, was a master of the Mannerist style. His work is characterised by elongated figures, complex poses, and a high degree of technical precision in the use of the burin. The figures of Bacchus and Ceres are rendered with muscular definition and graceful, serpentine postures that are typical of the period. The background elements, including the trees and the distant figures, are executed with fine hatching and cross-hatching to create a sense of atmospheric depth.
