George Catlin, an American painter and author, travelled extensively throughout the American West during the 1830s. His objective was to document the customs and traditions of Indigenous peoples before their ways of life were altered by westward expansion. This work depicts a ceremonial dance performed by Choctaw participants prior to a traditional ball-play match, a sport known for its physical intensity and cultural significance.

The composition is framed within an oval, a common stylistic choice for Catlin during this period. The scene captures a large gathering of individuals arranged in structured groups across an open plain. To the left, a dense cluster of figures engages in the dance, while others stand in orderly lines or sit near the foreground. The background features rolling green hills under a soft, expansive sky, rendered with the muted palette characteristic of Catlin's field studies.

Catlin produced hundreds of these paintings, which he later exhibited as his 'Indian Gallery'. His approach prioritised observational accuracy, though his work often reflects the aesthetic conventions of nineteenth-century European art.
