Description
A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Shunkōsai Hokushū depicting two kabuki actors in character, framed by cherry blossoms.
This woodblock print by Shunkōsai Hokushū depicts two kabuki actors, Bandō Mitsugorō III and Arashi Koroku IV, in their respective roles as Daihanji Kiyozumi and Koganosuke. Hokushū was a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, which operated in the Osaka and Kyoto regions. Unlike the Edo-based artists who often focused on idealised beauty, Kamigata artists frequently prioritised the specific likenesses of actors, capturing their individual facial features and expressions with precision.
The composition follows the yakusha-e tradition, which focuses on the portrayal of kabuki performers. The figures are positioned against a backdrop of cherry blossoms, a common motif in Japanese art that signifies the fleeting nature of life. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers of the period, particularly in the application of colour and the crispness of the line work. The actors wear traditional garments with distinct patterns, which provide a visual contrast to the organic forms of the blossoms above.
Hokushū was active during the early 19th century and is recognised for his contributions to the development of the Osaka print style. His work provides a window into the theatrical culture of the time, documenting the appearance and costume of performers who were popular with the urban public. The print is a characteristic example of the genre, balancing the narrative requirements of the theatrical scene with the aesthetic conventions of the Ukiyo-e movement. The use of space and the arrangement of the figures create a sense of intimacy, drawing the viewer into the dramatic interaction between the two characters.
