This engraving by Cornelis Cort depicts the Baptism of Christ, a subject frequently explored by artists of the sixteenth century. Cort, a Dutch engraver who spent his later years in Rome, was instrumental in translating the works of Italian masters into print. His technical approach to the copper plate allowed for a high degree of tonal variation, which is evident in the dramatic lighting surrounding the central figures.

The composition follows a traditional iconographic arrangement. John the Baptist stands on the right, pouring water over the head of Christ, who occupies the centre. Above them, the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove, surrounded by a radiant light that illuminates the clouds and the figures of God the Father and accompanying angels. The surrounding celestial beings are rendered with the elongated proportions and fluid drapery characteristic of the Mannerist style.

Cort utilised a system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the clouds. This method creates a sense of volume and depth, despite the limitations of the monochromatic medium. The lower portion of the print includes Latin text, which provides theological context for the scene. This work demonstrates the precision of Cort's burin work, which influenced the development of reproductive printmaking across Europe.
