Théo van Rysselberghe, a central figure in the Belgian Neo-Impressionist circle, produced this work in 1892. The painting captures the quiet activity on the River Scheldt, a waterway that frequently appeared in his maritime studies. Van Rysselberghe employs the pointillist technique, applying small, distinct dots of colour to the canvas. This method relies on the viewer's eye to blend the pigments optically, creating a luminous quality that defines the water and the atmospheric sky.

The composition features two primary barges positioned in the foreground, their dark, sail-heavy forms contrasting against the lighter, shimmering surface of the river.
