Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, also known as Dietricy, was a prolific German artist who worked under the patronage of Augustus III of Poland. This etching, dated 1762, demonstrates his technical facility with the needle and his interest in classical mythology. The scene depicts a violent confrontation between marine deities, specifically tritons, amidst turbulent waters and reeds.

Dietrich was known for his ability to mimic the styles of earlier masters, particularly Rembrandt and the Dutch school. In this work, the energetic, calligraphic line quality and the dramatic, almost grotesque expressions of the figures reflect his engagement with the printmaking traditions of the seventeenth century. The composition focuses on the physical struggle, with one figure wielding a club while another attempts to defend himself.
