Ippitsusai Bunchō was a significant figure in the Ukiyo-e tradition, known primarily for his depictions of kabuki actors and elegant women. This hanging scroll, executed in ink and colour on silk, captures a quiet moment by the water. The composition features three women in traditional attire, their forms rendered with the slender, elongated proportions characteristic of Bunchō’s style during the mid-Edo period.

One figure stands in the foreground, holding a circular fan, while two others sit upon a raised platform near the shore. The background is defined by a rhythmic treatment of the water, indicated by fine, repetitive lines that suggest gentle movement. A weeping willow tree frames the right side of the scene, providing a vertical balance to the horizontal expanse of the river or bay. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted ochres, and subtle ink washes to create a sense of atmospheric calm.

Bunchō’s approach to the human figure emphasises grace and poise. The drapery of the kimonos is handled with precision, showing the influence of his training in the Kano school before he turned his attention to the floating world of Ukiyo-e.
