It depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Daniel, where King Belshazzar witnesses a miraculous inscription appearing on the wall during a banquet. The scene is defined by its immense architectural scale, featuring vast, colonnaded halls that recede into the distance, dwarfing the human figures below.

Martin employs a theatrical use of light to direct the viewer's attention. The glowing, supernatural writing on the wall serves as the primary light source, casting long shadows and illuminating the terrified guests. Above the palace, a stormy sky filled with lightning adds to the sense of impending doom.
