Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, occupies a unique position in the history of Chinese painting. As a member of the Ming dynasty imperial family who became a Buddhist monk after the fall of the dynasty, his work often reflects a sense of isolation and personal philosophy. This piece, executed in ink on paper, demonstrates his characteristic approach to the natural world. Rather than adhering to the rigid academic standards of his time, Shitao favoured a spontaneous, expressive application of ink.

The composition features a solitary figure positioned within a rugged, mountainous terrain. The foreground is dominated by dark, dense ink washes that define the foliage and rocky outcrops, creating a sense of weight and texture. In contrast, the background dissolves into lighter, atmospheric washes, suggesting the vastness of the river valley and the distant peaks of Mount Huang.
