Description
Big Belly Oak centres on its immense, furrowed trunk and spreading limbs, warmed by a peach-coloured sky above the quiet green fields of Wiltshire.
The old tree's bark is painted in deep folds of umber, grey and gold, widening at the base before dividing into low, muscular branches. Small leaf clusters break the silhouette against bands of yellow cloud, while slender supports and a fence line sit back in the grass. Beyond the trunk, gentle patchwork fields fade towards a soft purple horizon under the evening light.
Big Belly Oak is valued for the physical presence of a single long-lived tree, and the artwork gives that character room to dominate. The gnarled limbs, open field and low sun place the oak within a wider Wiltshire landscape, retaining the stillness of a landmark encountered at the edge of farmland.
