This lithograph by Gustave Doré captures the satirical spirit of mid-nineteenth-century French social commentary. On the left, titled 'Oiseau de proie' (Bird of Prey), a man in a top hat stands flanked by two women in elaborate, voluminous dresses. The title suggests a predatory nature, perhaps implying the man is a dandy or a fortune hunter seeking a match among the wealthy. His posture is rigid, and his gaze is fixed, contrasting with the decorative, ruffled layers of the women's attire. The sketch-like quality of the lines emphasises the fleeting, observational nature of the work.

On the right, titled 'Merlan' (Whiting fish), the scene shifts to a domestic or salon setting. A man sits while a hairdresser or attendant works on his hair. The term 'merlan' was a common French slang for a hairdresser during this period, derived from the white powder used on wigs. The figure is shown in a moment of vanity, peering into a mirror while his hair is styled. The contrast between the two scenes highlights the absurdity of social performance, from the public display of the dandy to the private grooming rituals of the elite.

Doré employs a light, fluid line quality that allows the characters to appear animated and slightly grotesque. The lack of background detail keeps the focus entirely on the figures and their social interactions. This print provides a glimpse into the observational humour that defined much of the popular press in nineteenth-century France, demonstrating the artist's ability to capture character through minimal, expressive strokes.
