Description
A pair of traditional Japanese hanging scrolls by Kiyohara Yukinobu, featuring delicate ink wash depictions of birds and seasonal flora.
Kiyohara Yukinobu, a prominent female artist of the seventeenth-century Kano school, produced this pair of hanging scrolls in the traditional kacho-ga style. This genre, focusing on birds and flowers, occupies a specific place within Japanese ink painting, prioritising the observation of natural cycles and the subtle interplay between flora and fauna. The work displays the characteristic ink wash techniques of the period, where varying densities of sumi ink create depth and atmosphere without the need for colour.
The composition is divided into two vertical panels, each presenting a quiet moment in nature. The left scroll features a bird perched upon a thorny branch above a cluster of flowering plants, while a second bird rests on the ground below. The right scroll depicts a similar arrangement, with birds interacting with branches and low-lying vegetation. The artist employs a delicate touch, using fine lines for the avian details and broader, softer strokes for the foliage and ground. The background remains largely empty, a technique that allows the viewer to focus on the specific forms of the subjects.
As a member of the Kiyohara family, which was closely linked to the Kano school, Yukinobu was trained in the rigorous techniques of the time. Her work reflects the technical precision expected of the school, yet it maintains a distinct sense of balance and restraint. The scrolls are mounted in the traditional fashion, with decorative fabric borders that frame the ink paintings. This presentation is typical of Edo-period interior aesthetics, where such scrolls were displayed in a tokonoma, or alcove, to reflect the changing seasons. The muted palette and the focus on natural subjects provide a sense of calm, demonstrating the artist's ability to capture the essence of the natural world through minimal means.
