Description
A six-panel folding screen by Shibata Zeshin, featuring birds and seasonal flowers set against gold-leafed clouds.
Shibata Zeshin, a master of both lacquerware and painting, demonstrates his command of the Kacho-ga tradition in this six-panel folding screen. The composition employs the classic Japanese technique of using stylised gold clouds to segment the visual space, creating a sense of depth while maintaining a decorative surface. These metallic forms act as frames for the natural subjects, guiding the eye across the seasonal transition depicted from left to right.
The work features a variety of flora and fauna, including irises, peonies, and hollyhocks, rendered with precise brushwork. Zeshin balances the delicate, calligraphic lines of the plant stems with the solid, opaque forms of the blossoms. Small birds are positioned throughout the scene, providing a sense of scale and movement. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the contrast between the reflective gold leaf and the muted, earthy tones of the ground and foliage.
Zeshin was active during the transition from the Edo to the Meiji period, a time when traditional Japanese aesthetics began to encounter Western influence. Despite this, his work remains firmly grounded in the techniques of the Kano and Shijo schools. His ability to integrate the materiality of gold leaf with the fluidity of ink painting is evident here. The screen functions as a unified narrative of the natural world, where the passage of time is suggested through the changing states of the plants. This piece reflects the artist's technical precision and his deep familiarity with the conventions of Japanese screen painting, offering a view of nature that is both observed and highly stylised.
