Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) was a French painter and sculptor, known for his academic style and Orientalist themes. These Orientalist works reflected a Western fascination with the 'exotic' cultures of the East, often romanticising or idealising them. 'Black Bashi Bazouk' exemplifies Gérôme's Orientalist style.
