Anton Mauve, a central figure of the Hague School, produced this watercolour study of a bleaching field, or bleekveld, during a period when he was deeply engaged with the rural life of the Netherlands. The work captures a quiet, domestic scene: a woman in traditional attire tends to laundry spread across the grass to whiten in the sun. Behind her, a row of modest, thatched-roof cottages sits under a heavy, overcast sky, typical of the Dutch climate that Mauve frequently depicted.

Mauve utilised a restrained palette of greys, browns, and muted greens to convey the atmospheric conditions of the day.
