Patrick Heron was a central figure in the St Ives School, a group of artists who relocated to Cornwall during the mid-twentieth century. His work is defined by an exploration of colour, light, and the spatial relationships between flat planes of pigment. In this screenprint, Heron employs a non-representational approach, focusing on the interaction between distinct, organic shapes and the surrounding field of colour.

The composition is dominated by a large, expansive area of yellow, which acts as a ground for the floating forms. Heron uses a specific vocabulary of shapes, often described as soft-edged or amoebic, to create a sense of movement across the surface. The blue elements, varying in tone from deep ultramarine to lighter cerulean, appear to interlock or dovetail with the yellow background. This technique creates a tension between the two-dimensional nature of the print and the suggestion of depth, as the colours seem to advance or recede depending on their placement.

Heron often spoke of his interest in the way colour can create space without the need for traditional perspective. By placing these irregular forms against a solid field, he forces the viewer to engage with the physical properties of the ink and the paper. The inclusion of smaller, contrasting elements, such as the red shape on the left and the dark brown form at the bottom right, provides a counterpoint to the primary blue and yellow dialogue. This work reflects Heron's mature period, where his focus shifted towards larger, more simplified forms that allowed for a direct experience of colour. The screenprint medium is particularly suited to this style, as it allows for the flat, even application of pigment that is necessary to achieve the desired optical effect.
