Description
A 1928 still life by Suzanne Valadon, featuring a glass vase of flowers rendered with bold brushwork and firm, clear forms.
Suzanne Valadon, a self-taught artist who began her career as a model for painters such as Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, developed a distinct approach to painting that prioritised firm outlines and a direct application of colour. This still life, dated 1928, demonstrates her mature style. The composition centres on a glass vase filled with a variety of blooms, placed upon a dark wooden table.
Valadon avoids the soft, atmospheric blurring common in Impressionist works. Instead, she employs bold, deliberate brushwork to define the petals and leaves. The glass vase is rendered with transparency, allowing the viewer to see the stems submerged in water, a detail that adds a sense of physical presence to the arrangement. The background is treated with a muted, neutral tone, which prevents the floral colours from becoming lost and keeps the focus on the structure of the bouquet itself.
Her approach to form is robust. She does not seek to idealise the flowers, but rather to capture their weight and volume. The colour palette is balanced, featuring soft pinks, whites, and touches of orange, set against the darker tones of the furniture and the muted wall. This work reflects the artist's interest in the tangible reality of objects. By the late 1920s, Valadon had moved away from the more experimental phases of her earlier career, settling into a confident, representational mode that valued clarity of form and a disciplined application of paint. The painting remains a clear example of her ability to transform a domestic subject into a study of light, volume, and composition, without relying on sentimentality or excessive decoration.
