Joseph Lindon Smith, an artist known for his meticulous documentation of archaeological sites and historical monuments, produced this study of the Triumphal Quadriga in Venice. The work captures the four bronze horses that have adorned the facade of St Mark's Basilica since the thirteenth century, following their removal from Constantinople. Smith employs a precise, observational approach, focusing on the weathered texture of the metal and the classical proportions of the equine figures.

The composition emphasises the physical presence of the sculptures against the backdrop of the Venetian architecture. By isolating the horses from the bustling activity of the piazza, Smith directs the viewer to the sculptural qualities of the bronze. His technique reflects his training at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he developed a disciplined method of recording form and light.
