Timothy Cole was a master of the wood engraving technique, known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the medium of print. This work, titled Buttery, demonstrates his technical precision and his dedication to reproducing the atmospheric effects of Dutch Golden Age painting. The scene depicts a domestic interior, where a woman and a child interact within a space defined by light and shadow.

Cole utilised a complex system of lines and cross-hatching to achieve the subtle gradations of light seen on the walls and the tiled floor.
