This engraving by Giorgio Ghisi depicts a dramatic episode from Roman history: the moment the exiled general Caius Marius confronts the assassin sent to execute him in his prison cell. Ghisi, a master of the burin, employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching to define the muscular anatomy of the soldiers and the heavy, sculptural folds of Marius's robes. The composition is tightly controlled, focusing on the psychological tension between the armed men and the seated, defiant figure of the general.

Ghisi was active in Mantua and worked closely with the publisher Antonio Lafreri in Rome, whose name appears on the plate. The scene draws upon the Mannerist tradition, characterised by elongated proportions and a sense of theatrical artifice.
