Description
A refined ink and colour album leaf by Wang Jian, featuring traditional Shan Shui brushwork depicting a quiet dwelling among rocks and trees.
This work is a leaf from an album created by Wang Jian, a member of the Six Masters of the early Qing period. The composition follows the traditional Shan Shui style, focusing on the relationship between natural forms and architectural elements. Wang Jian employs a restrained palette, using ink washes to define the mass of the rocks and the structure of the trees, while subtle colour tints provide a sense of atmospheric depth.
The scene depicts a small dwelling positioned behind large, rounded rock formations. The trees, rendered with dry, calligraphic brushwork, occupy the foreground, their bare branches reaching upward against the negative space of the paper. A small cluster of bamboo sits between the rocks and the building, providing a vertical contrast to the horizontal orientation of the stone masses. The distant mountains are suggested through light, pale blue washes, creating a sense of distance without overwhelming the foreground details.
Wang Jian was known for his study of earlier masters, particularly those of the Yuan Dynasty. His approach here reflects a disciplined adherence to classical brush techniques. The calligraphic inscription in the upper right corner provides context for the work, identifying it as part of a series produced for a specific patron. The balance between the solid, textured rocks and the delicate, linear quality of the trees demonstrates the artist's control over ink density and brush pressure. This print captures the quiet, contemplative nature of the original album leaf, preserving the subtle tonal variations and the precise, rhythmic quality of the ink work. It is an example of the literati tradition, where the focus remains on the expressive potential of the brush and the internal harmony of the composition.
