Stefan Luchian, a primary figure in modern Romanian painting, produced this study of carnations during a period when his focus shifted toward the intimate observation of nature. The composition features a ceramic vase containing a dense arrangement of white, pink, and deep red carnations. Several blossoms have fallen onto the surface below, creating a sense of casual, lived-in domesticity. Luchian employs a heavy impasto technique, applying paint with visible, energetic brushwork that gives the petals a tactile quality. The background consists of a warm, earthy ochre tone, which provides a contrast to the cooler whites and the saturated reds of the flowers. The vase itself, decorated with simple blue bands, sits on a light-coloured cloth that anchors the arrangement within the frame.
