Cotman travelled to France on three occasions between 1817 and 1820, gathering sketches that would later be translated into these precise, monochromatic prints.

The composition focuses on the imposing silhouette of the castle, which rises above the surrounding foliage. Cotman employs a disciplined system of lines to define the stone masonry, the textures of the earth, and the reflective surface of the water in the foreground.
