Description
A precise etching by Wenceslaus Hollar depicting an ornate chalice, based on a design by Andrea Mantegna.
This etching by Wenceslaus Hollar depicts a highly ornate chalice, a work based on a design attributed to the Italian Renaissance master Andrea Mantegna. Hollar, a Bohemian etcher who spent much of his career in England, was celebrated for his technical precision and his ability to render textures with exceptional clarity. In this print, he captures the metallic sheen and the complex sculptural elements of the vessel with remarkable fidelity.
The chalice itself features a wide, flared bowl decorated with a frieze of figures, resting upon a hexagonal stem adorned with small statuettes. The base is broad and multi-faceted, displaying a series of decorative panels that suggest a high degree of craftsmanship. Hollar employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the volume of the object, distinguishing between the smooth surfaces of the bowl and the shadowed recesses of the stem and base. The light source appears to come from the upper left, creating a subtle gradient across the bowl that emphasises its curved form.
This work is a fine example of Hollar's contribution to the tradition of reproductive printmaking, where the etcher translates the work of another artist into a new medium. By documenting such objects, Hollar provided a visual record of decorative arts that might otherwise have been lost or remained inaccessible to a wider audience. The inscription at the bottom of the plate identifies the source of the design, reflecting the scholarly approach Hollar took toward his subjects. The print is characterised by a clean, disciplined line quality, typical of his mature style, which prioritises descriptive accuracy over expressive distortion. It remains a valuable reference for those interested in the history of metalwork and the dissemination of Renaissance design through the medium of the printed image.
