This hand-coloured albumen print by Kusakabe Kimbei captures a scene at Koganei, a location celebrated during the Meiji period for its cherry blossom trees lining the banks of the Tamagawa Josui canal. Kimbei, a former assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried, operated a successful studio in Yokohama. His work catered to the growing international interest in Japanese culture, often employing local artists to apply watercolours to black-and-white photographs by hand.

The composition draws the eye along the narrow waterway, flanked by grassy banks where figures gather to observe the blossoms. A large, gnarled cherry tree dominates the foreground, its branches extending across the frame to provide a natural canopy. The application of colour is subtle, focusing on the soft pinks of the petals and the varied greens of the foliage, which contrasts with the muted tones of the figures' traditional clothing. This technique was common in the late nineteenth century, intended to provide a more atmospheric representation of the subject than monochromatic photography allowed.

Koganei was a popular destination for hanami, the traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers. The print documents both the natural environment and the social activity of the era. The inclusion of the number 630 and the title 'CHERRY BANK' in the lower corner indicates this was part of a commercial catalogue, produced for sale to tourists and collectors abroad.
