The background shows the distant crosses of Golgotha, providing a narrative link to the preceding events of the Passion. In the foreground, Mellan introduces a more visceral element: a figure emerging from an open grave, surrounded by skeletal remains. This inclusion refers to the biblical account of the resurrection of the saints following the death of Christ, a detail that adds a layer of theological complexity to the composition.

Mellan avoids heavy cross-hatching, preferring instead to vary the thickness and spacing of his lines to define the rocky terrain and the drapery of the figures.
