Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and this engraving represents the pinnacle of his technical ability. The composition is dense, featuring a multitude of figures that crowd the frame as they move towards the site of the crucifixion. Schongauer uses a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of armour, fabric, and the rugged terrain.
