The composition places Christ in the centre, his body angled forward as he is guided by soldiers. His expression is one of resignation and sorrow. To the left, a group of cherubic figures observes the scene, providing a contrast to the harsh reality of the soldiers on the right. The Latin inscription, 'Pater ignosce illis non enim sciunt quid faciunt' (Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do), is integrated into the halo surrounding Christ's head, a characteristic detail of Mellan's graphic style.

Mellan spent a significant portion of his career in Rome, where he absorbed the influence of Italian masters. This exposure informed his approach to light and shadow, which he translated into the monochromatic medium of engraving with precision.
