This engraving by the Flemish master Hieronymus Wierix depicts the Man of Sorrows, a subject common in late sixteenth-century devotional art. Christ stands in the centre, displaying the wounds of the crucifixion, while two angels kneel on either side. The angel on the left holds the cross and the lance, while the angel on the right supports the column used during the flagellation. Above, the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove, surrounded by a celestial light and cherubim.

Wierix was a member of a prolific family of engravers based in Antwerp. His technical precision is evident in the fine hatching used to model the figures and the atmospheric treatment of the clouds. The composition follows the conventions of the period, balancing the central figure of Christ with the symmetrical placement of the angels. The instruments of the Passion, known as the Arma Christi, are rendered with careful attention to their physical form, serving as reminders of the narrative of the crucifixion.
