Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, produced this work in 1521. The composition depicts the apocryphal narrative of Christ bidding farewell to the Virgin Mary before his Passion. Lotto places the figures within a spacious, classical loggia, which opens onto a serene garden. The architectural setting, defined by rhythmic arches and columns, provides a structured backdrop for the emotional exchange occurring in the foreground.

Christ is shown kneeling, his posture one of humility and submission. The Virgin Mary, overcome with grief, is supported by the holy women. To the left, Saint Peter and Saint John observe the scene, their presence grounding the event in biblical tradition. On the right, a female figure sits in contemplation, holding a book, which adds a layer of quiet introspection to the composition. Lotto employs a clear, balanced arrangement of figures, typical of the period, yet he infuses the scene with a specific psychological tension.
