This etching by Adrian Ludwig Richter, titled Die Christnacht, captures the Biedermeier sensibility regarding domestic piety and folklore. Richter, a central figure in 19th-century German art, was known for his ability to blend naturalistic observation with a sense of wonder. The composition is structured vertically, drawing the eye from the quiet, snow-dusted village at the base up toward the celestial light of the Christmas tree.

At the centre of the image, angels attend to a large fir tree, which acts as a bridge between the earthly realm and the divine. Below them, a group of putti gathers around the infant Christ, who rests amidst clouds. The contrast between the dark, atmospheric village and the luminous, ethereal figures above creates a clear narrative of spiritual visitation. Richter utilised fine hatching and cross-hatching techniques to achieve the soft, glowing quality of the light emanating from the tree and the star at the apex.
