This drypoint engraving by the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, also known as the Master of the Housebook, represents a curious intersection of heraldic tradition and genre observation. Active in the Upper Rhine region during the late fifteenth century, this anonymous artist is recognised for a fluid, sketch-like quality in their printmaking, which departs from the rigid cross-hatching common to the period.

The composition features a shield surmounted by a helmet and a crest in the form of a cock. Within the shield, the artist depicts an elderly woman seated at a spinning wheel. Her posture is hunched, and her features are rendered with a degree of realism that contrasts with the formal, decorative nature of the surrounding mantling. The swirling, calligraphic lines of the foliage-like mantling demonstrate the artist's technical command of the drypoint needle, which allows for softer, more expressive marks than traditional burin engraving.
