Francis Frith, a prominent British photographer, undertook three expeditions to Egypt and the Near East between 1856 and 1860. His work provided the Victorian public with their first detailed visual records of these ancient sites. The image displays the towering, weathered columns of the temple, which was constructed during the reign of Amenhotep III.

Frith utilised the wet collodion process, a method requiring the photographer to prepare, expose, and develop glass plates on-site. This technical demand was significant given the harsh desert conditions.
