Description
A graphite study by Willem de Famars Testas featuring a portrait of a Nubian man, a profile of a sheikh, and a river scene in Nubia.
This graphite study by Willem de Famars Testas offers a glimpse into the observational practices of a nineteenth-century Dutch artist travelling through North Africa. The sheet is divided into three distinct sections, capturing the varied subjects encountered during his time in the region. At the top left, a standing figure is depicted in traditional robes, accompanied by the handwritten note 'Jeune Nubien'. Beside this, a detailed profile study of a man, labelled 'Cheick', demonstrates the artist's focus on physiognomy and character. The lower portion of the page features a light, atmospheric sketch of a riverbank, identified by the artist as 'petites îles dans le Nil en Nubie'.
Testas was a dedicated traveller who spent significant time in Egypt and the surrounding territories. His sketches often functioned as visual diaries, recording the people, architecture, and geography he observed. The line work is precise and economical, reflecting a disciplined approach to drawing that prioritises clarity over decorative flourish. The paper retains its original, slightly irregular edge, which provides a sense of the work's provenance as a page from a working sketchbook rather than a finished gallery piece. By documenting these specific figures and locations, Testas provides a record of the social and geographical environment of the Nile valley during the mid-nineteenth century. The composition is balanced, allowing the viewer to appreciate both the individual portraiture and the broader environmental context within a single frame. This print preserves the subtle tonal variations of the original graphite, ensuring that the delicate shading and handwritten annotations remain clear and legible.
