This graphite study by the Dutch artist Willem de Famars Testas captures two distinct observations from his travels in Egypt. The upper portion of the sheet depicts a figure operating a shaduf, a traditional irrigation tool used to lift water from the Nile. The artist focuses on the physical exertion of the worker, using light, precise pencil strokes to define the anatomy and the mechanical structure of the lever. Beside this figure, a handwritten note identifies the subject as a shaduf in Egypt.

The lower portion of the composition features a cargo boat, labelled by the artist as a 'barque marchande'. The drawing details the rigging and the heavy load of the vessel, reflecting the artist's interest in the daily commerce and river transport of the region. Testas, who spent significant time in the Middle East during the mid-nineteenth century, produced numerous sketches of this nature, documenting the local customs and infrastructure he encountered.
