Description
A mid-career abstract work by Arshile Gorky, featuring a balanced arrangement of biomorphic shapes and geometric forms in a muted, earthy palette.
Arshile Gorky, born Vostanig Manoug Adoian, occupied a unique position in the development of American modernism. This work, titled Composition, reflects his transition from the influence of European masters like Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró toward the fluid, biomorphic abstraction that defined his later career. During the 1930s, Gorky engaged deeply with the visual language of Surrealism, adopting its focus on subconscious imagery and organic forms.
In this piece, the viewer observes a deliberate arrangement of flat, geometric shapes alongside softer, rounded figures. The palette is restrained, relying on a base of white and grey to support blocks of ochre, muted green, and black. These elements do not represent specific objects in the physical world. Instead, they function as a series of visual signs. The composition balances tension between the rigid, angular sections and the more fluid, curved motifs.
Technically, the paint application shows a focus on surface texture, with visible brushwork that avoids the slick finish of earlier commercial design work. Gorky used these forms to explore memory and personal history, often layering shapes to create a sense of depth without traditional perspective. The work demonstrates his method of synthesising European avant-garde styles with his own developing aesthetic. By the late 1930s, Gorky had moved away from direct imitation of his influences, beginning to favour the spontaneous, gestural lines that would eventually inform the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York. This print captures the specific period where his structural rigour began to yield to the more lyrical, emotive qualities of his mature style.
