Paul Sandby, often described as the father of the English watercolour school, produced this view of Conway Castle during the late eighteenth century. The work reflects the period's fascination with the Welsh countryside and the picturesque qualities of medieval ruins. Sandby was a founding member of the Royal Academy and his technical approach combined precise topographical observation with a delicate application of wash.

The composition is balanced, placing the imposing stone structure of the castle upon a rocky promontory that extends into the estuary. To the left, a cluster of trees frames the scene, their foliage rendered with soft, layered washes that suggest depth and texture. The foreground includes small figures and livestock, which provide a sense of scale against the architectural mass of the fortress.
