This portrait of the Flemish painter Cornelis de Vos is a fine example of the printmaking skill of Lucas Vorsterman I. The work forms part of the Iconography, a series of portraits of famous contemporaries initiated by Anthony van Dyck. Vorsterman, a highly capable engraver, worked closely with Van Dyck to translate the painterly qualities of the original oil portraits into the precise medium of copperplate engraving.

The composition presents De Vos in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed towards the viewer with a sense of calm authority. The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the texture of the subject's clothing and the subtle modelling of his facial features.
